The attractive wet dash houses of Wadelai, North Dublin have large back gardens and lots of potential. The family wanted a generous kitchen, dining, family space with a flexible space adjoining for working from home.

A 30m² extension across the south facing rear was devised. On entering the house you see straight through a floor to ceiling glass door out to the garden. A large roof light lies at the rear wall to flood the kitchen with light. With plastered fins, direct sun blinding is minimised. In the existing house a sitting room was retained and the hallway extended to include cloak, utility, laundry and shower room. 

Externally brick, steel and timber were chosen for their tactility and warm texture, along with a slate patio level to the garden. Two steps from the rear extension link the garden and the new addition while also acting as seating for family on sunny days. A large picture window from the new adjoining office frames views to the garden. 

The house was externally insulated, and solar panels and under floor heating were installed.
